Fredric DeVries, B. A. Educ. ARCCO, FRCCOFredric Devries

Fredric is the Director of Music at St. Paul’s, organist, director of the Chancel Choir and the Celestial Singers, coordinating the 5 choirs at the church and other musical events. Fredric was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and you can tell it occasionally when the American accent pops up when he speaks. Music has always been a great interest since childhood; musical ability came from his father, who sang and played clarinet, and musical discipline came from his mother, a teacher.

He attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan as a National Merit Scholar and recipient of a FredricChorister’s Guild Scholarship, and studied music education and organ performance. Upon graduation from college he immigrated to Canada and settled in the Hamilton area. He has taught music in elementary and high schools in Hamilton, Picton, and Mississauga. Before coming to St. Paul’s in 1996, Fredric had been organist in Presbyterian and Anglican churches in Hamilton, Picton, Brantford, and Toronto. Fredric teaches group piano classes in Toronto and also with the Avalon Music Academy in Dundas. He has led community choirs in Brantford and Stoney Creek. He also enjoys composing music for worship. Fredric holds both Associate (Peaker Scholarship) and Fellowship degrees from the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

He is also the President on the Hamilton Centre of the RCCO. Music continues in the next generation. His daughter, Anne, is an excellent violinist and teaches music at Maclachlan College.

Celestial Singers & Sunbeams

The Celestial Singers for children ages 7 to 14, and the Sunbeams for children 4-6 have been growing over the past seasons.  Children from the Dundas community as well as from St. Paul's congregation are participating in joy of singing in a choir.  Everyone has a gift they can bring to this group.  Much enthusiasm, talent and Celestial & Sunbeamslearning is found in these bright young people.

A welcome is extended to ALL children in this community to come be part of the musical experience.

There is an open invitation for all children of the community to come and take advantage of these groups. This is an excellent outreach and evangelism program at St. Paul's, as children become exposed to the great themes of our faith, by way of songs and drama designed for children.

As those of you, who have at some time participated in a choir like this, will know, it will be an experience that stays with them throughout their lives. The children are getting to know each other through theme nights, like our Halloween party, and are quickly learning many new songs. They will be singing in worship at least once a month, and more frequently in Advent and Holy Week.  They go caroling at nearby nursing homes for Christmas.
The highlight of the season every year will be production of the musical in early May.

Sweet Refrain

Sweet Refrain is St. Paul's "contemporary" choir. The choir consists of approximately 15 singers and several musicians. We are alwaysSweet Refrain open to new members. Our repertoire is a mixture of contemporary, Christian, folk and pop songs. We are also blessed with personal pieces from our own members.

Sweet Refrain performs at St Paul's, and also takes the show on the road. We sing during the Sunday service, at retirement and nursing homes, and community events.

If you are interested in having Sweet Refrain join you at your service or event, email us or call the church at 905-628-9363

Handbells

"Bells on the Horses Ring"
It's a phrase that sounds like it comes from a Christmas Carol, but it actually is a phrase found in Zechariah 14, and the prophet tells of the joyful sounds that will be heard when the great King, the Messiah comes to deliver the people.

For centuries, bells have been associated with the Christian faith, as they ring their pure tones, clear and true, proclaiming the message of joy, peace, and love.
